While presenting the Union Budget 2017, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced an online education platform called ‘SWAYAM’. Aimed at offering virtual education, this platform will offer up to 350 online courses.
SWAYAM platform, initiated by the Indian government, aims at bridging “the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.” Over 350 online courses will be on offer, and to make them easily accessible, one will be able to access these courses via Direct-To-Home (DTH) channels.
SWAYAM courses are interactive and include video lectures, downloadable study materials, self-assessment tests, and also an online discussion platform for students. These courses are collectively prepared by over 1,000 teachers across the country, and free of cost for Indian citizens. These courses are meant for students from Class 9 to post-graduation level.
