The Freedom 251, despite all its controversies, is pegged to be the cheapest Android smartphone. However, it’s yet to be seen if the manufacturers will actually deliver the device to the customers.

In order to compete with the Ringing Bells offering, a relatively new player in the scene called Docoss has unveiled the X1 smartphone in the country. This offering too has ignited quite a bit of skepticism among the general public since the company is promising to offer the handset for just Rs 888. This doesn’t sound as ludicrous as the Freedom 251, but it’s an extremely low priced device nonetheless.

Let’s have a closer look at the two devices to know if there are any other significant advantages barring the pricing.

Key features

This is an area where the Freedom 251 and the Docoss X1 don’t really differ from each other. But one thing that stands out for us personally is the pricing, which is where the Freedom 251 comfortably edges out the Docoss X1 (well, at least on paper). While both handsets pack 4-inch displays, the Freedom 251 packs a slightly improved resolution of 960×540 while the X1 has a 480×800 display.

Design

Again, no real winner here as both the handsets have a pretty basic design. Of course, one can’t and shouldn’t expect a premium design when the manufacturers are quoting a price tag of Rs 251 or Rs 888. The Freedom 251 however deserves a special mention as the front panel looks eerily similar to an Apple iPhone with a Touch ID sensor. Of course, the handset doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner, so this is merely a visual feature in order to tap into the psyche of iPhone fans. Adcom, the company that supplied initial units of the Freedom 251 (for reviews), should take most of the credit/blame for this.

Camera

The Freedom 251 has a 3.2MP rear camera on the back and a VGA front camera. The Docoss X1 on the other hand sports a 2MP rear camera and a 0.3MP front camera. So in terms of plain hardware, the Freedom 251 appears to have an upper hand over the X1. However, there shouldn’t be much of a difference in real world usage.

Battery

The Docoss offering is packing a 1,300 mAh battery under the hood while the Freedom 251 has a 1,450 mAh battery underneath. It’s pretty neck and neck really, but the Freedom 251 should have a better battery life overall, especially since it’s running a more recent version of Android compared to the Docoss X1.

Other features

In terms of internal storage, the Freedom 251 comes with an 8GB storage module underneath, while the Docoss X1 is settling with a 4GB unit. Both devices have expandable storage, so the limited onboard storage shouldn’t be a major concern for prospective buyers. The two devices come with 1GB of RAM underneath, which means the two are on level terms here.

Pricing and availability

At Rs 251 (plus shipping), the Freedom 251 is easily the cheapest handset of the two. It is currently not available for ordering as the manufacturers are scrambling to get their distribution in order. The company has promised to deliver the handset by May. The Docoss X1 at Rs 888 is also not all that expensive and went up for order yesterday, with the company promising deliveries by May 2, although it seems a little too hard to believe.
