Origin and Collaboration:

Developed at DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishments (ARDE) in Pune, this assault rifle is the result of a strategic collaboration with Dvipa Armour India Private Limited, a reputable firm based in Hyderabad. The collaboration has resulted in a weapon that not only meets stringent standards but also aligns with the modern needs of the armed forces.

Technical Specifications:

The ‘Ugram’ comes equipped with a 20-round magazine, providing both single and full auto firing modes. Its design draws comparisons with the latest AK and AR-type rifles, featuring a rivet-free construction that ensures unparalleled sturdiness, essential for the rigors of military operations.

Adherence to Indian Army’s Standards:

Scientists involved in the project underlined the rifle’s meticulous development process, emphasizing its alignment with the Indian Army’s General Staff Qualitative Requirements (GSQRs) for contemporary assault rifles. This commitment to meeting and exceeding established standards ensures that the ‘Ugram’ is not just a weapon but a solution tailored to the unique needs of the Indian armed forces.

Developmental Strategy – Speed and Precision:

Addressing the rifle’s development process, ARDE Director Ankathi Raju highlighted the mission mode approach adopted two years ago. He stated, “After the ARDE designed the rifle, we started looking for a private industry partner for development and manufacturing.” Raju further detailed the innovative Development cum Production Partner (DcPP) concept, ensuring the vendor’s involvement during both the design and production phases, contributing to the swift progress of the project.

Upcoming Trials and Future Outlook:

Looking ahead, Raju outlined the next steps for the ‘Ugram,’ stating, “As part of its trial, a set number of rounds will be fired from ‘Ugram’ without stoppage, and accuracy and consistency checks will be conducted.” These trials will further validate the rifle’s performance and reliability, paving the way for potential integration into the Indian Army’s arsenal.

The unveiling of ‘Ugram’ is not merely an event; it signifies a stride forward in India’s technological capabilities and a commitment to equipping its armed forces with cutting-edge solutions.
